GRANITE CITY, Ill. — Jansen Lawson locked in instead of locking out.

The Quincy High School senior right-hander allowed the Granite City baseball team to tie Thursday’s game at 1 in the second inning when he hit back-to-back batters with two outs to force in a run. A groundout ended the inning, and Lawson was in complete control thereafter.

He allowed just one hit and five baserunners over the final five innings to guide the Blue Devils to a 4-1 victory.

Lawson struck out six, walked three and allowed just two hits total in winning his second game this season.

The Blue Devils (6-5) backed him by scoring twice in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Quincy opened the game by scoring with two outs in the first inning on Nate Konrad’s RBI single. In the third, Kyle Taylor singled with one out and went to third when Brady Lowe reached on an error. After Lowe stole second, a balk forced Taylor in with the go-ahead run and moved Lowe to third base. Konrad grounded out before Lawson singled to left field to drive in Lowe.

In the fourth, Quincy’s Gavin Powell led off with a single, was sacrificed to second base and scored on Evan Sohn’s single through the right side of the infield.

Lawson went 3 for 4 as the Blue Devils collected 10 hits — all singles. Taylor had two hits.
