WASHINGTON, Mich. — A birdie-filled 18 holes earned Quincy native Luke Guthrie the opportunity to tee it up on the PGA Tour this week.

Guthrie rolled in seven birdies during his round of 6-under 66 at The Orchards Golf Club in the Monday qualifier for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, tying for first place and earning one of the four spots in the 156-player field.

Guthrie tied with Chris Naegel of Wildwood, Mo., and they finished a stroke ahead of KK Limbhasut of Phoenix and Erik Flores of Cornelius, N.C.

Those four will play the Detroit Golf Club beginning Thursday. Tee times have yet to be released. Television coverage of the first two rounds will be from 2-5 p.m. both days on the Golf Channel.

This will be Guthrie’s first PGA Tour event since playing in the Valspar Championship in March. He shot a 2-under 140, but missed the cut. That was his first Tour event since playing the U.S. Open in 2019. He’s been on the Korn Ferry Tour since the start of the 2017 season.

In Monday’s qualifier, Guthrie shot 3-under 33 on both nines. He birdied three of the four par-5s, and he closed both nines with birdies. His seven birdies topped the field.
