Gems tie game in top of eighth, then give up 10 runs in bottom of eighth to lose at Springfield
QUINCY — Merrick Mathews’ single scored Jordan Duncan with the tying run for the Quincy Gems in the top of the eighth inning on Monday night in a Prospect League game at Robin Roberts Field.
The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes followed in the bottom of the eighth inning with 10 runs to win the game 16-6 as the game was stopped because of the 10-run rule.
The Gems (9-10) are one game behind first-place Normal in the Great Lakes Division standings.
Gems reliever Noah Harbin took the loss, throwing 50 pitches in the eighth inning and allowing seven hits and two walks while also hitting two batters.
Gabe Swansen hit a two-run homer for the Gems in the second inning. Andrew Fay scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. Otto Jones delivered an RBI double and Matthews drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning.
