Gems receive 14 walks, seven of them turn into runs in road victory over Burlington
BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Gems took advantage of 14 walks from Burlington Bees pitchers, and seven of them scored Friday night in an 11-4 victory in a Prospect League game on Friday night at Community Field.
The Gems (7-9) are 2 1/2 games behind first-place Normal in the Great River Division.
Winning pitcher Brayden Haug allowed five hits, five walks and four runs in five innings for Quincy. The game’s most effective pitcher was Ryan Chmielewski, who pitched four scoreless innings for the save. He allowed two hits and struck out three. Chmielewski has pitched 9 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.
Andrew Fay led off the game for Quincy with a double, and he scored on Matthew Batts’ home run to right. Batts has four home runs this summer and ranks third in the Prospect League in that category. Batts also has 16 RBIs and ranks fourth in the league in that category.
Quincy added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Latham, but Burlington took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, with two runs scoring on a throwing error.
The advantage was short-lived. Quincy pushed six runs across in the top of the fourth on two hits, six walks and a Bees error.
Burlington’s CJ Lewis shut the door on the Gems for the next four innings, allowing no hits but issuing five walks and giving up a run. He struck out four.
Dylan Wipperman and Hayden Moore had RBI singles in the ninth inning for Quincy. Both teams had seven hits.
