Gems muster just five hits, strike out 18 times in suffering third consecutive loss
CLINTON, Iowa — Offensive struggles continue for the Quincy Gems, who were limited to five hits in a 4-1 loss to the Clinton LumberKings on Friday night at NelsonCorp Field in a Prospect League game.
The Gems (0-2 second half, 19-15 overall) have lost three straight games and are 1 1/2 games behind Clinton, which is in first place in the Great River Division.
Zack Stewart homered in the first inning for the only run for the Gems, who struck out 18 times. Quincy has just 13 hits and five runs in its last three games with a team batting average of .146.
The Gems’ best chance to extend their lead was in the sixth inning when Dylan Wipperman, Luke Napleton and Lucas Loos all singled to load the bases. However, Jonathan Latham struck out and Drew Townsend grounded out to end the threat.
Clinton scored all of its runs in the sixth inning. Brayden Haug shut out the LumberKings through five innings, but he was knocked out of the game when he hit a batter and allowed three singles and a double in the sixth.
Reliever Tim O’Connor also allowed a run-scoring single in the sixth.
