Gems limited to six hits, one run as they are officially out of second-half race for division title
ALTON, Ill. — The Quincy Gems were officially eliminated from any chance of winning the second half title in the Prospect League’s Great River Division with a 3-1 loss to the Alton River Dragons on Wednesday night.
The Gems (9-15 second half, 28-28 overall) are six games behind first-place Normal with four games left to play. Quincy will play host to Normal in a first-round game in the Prospect League playoffs on Sunday night.
Shane Kearbey and Cameron Crain combined to limit the Gems to four hits and no runs in the first eight innings. Quincy’s only run came in the ninth inning when Logan Voth singled in Drew Townsend with two outs. Hayden Moore flew out to end the game, stranding the tying runs on base.
Quincy starter Andrew Fay took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs in five innings. Reliever Ryan Foley pitched three scoreless innings.
