Eighth-inning rally leads to Gems’ first victory of Prospect League season
BURLINGTON, Iowa — A five-run eighth inning propelled the Quincy Gems to their first Prospect League victory of the season, an 8-7 victory over the Burlington Bees.
Trailing 7-3, Gems right fielder Greg Swansen led off the eighth with a home run to left field. Logan Voth doubled, Andrew Fay walked and Tye Wood walked to load the bases. Lucas Loos’ RBI groundout got a run and moved two runners into scoring position.
Matthew Batts followed with a two-run double, and Zack Stewart drove in Batts with a single to right field to take the lead.
The Bees went down in order in the final two innings to split the two-game series.
Gems catcher Otto Jones doubled twice and was one of five Quincy players with two hits apiece.
Cael Kolacia picked up the victory in relief, working 4 ⅔ innings while allowing three hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Gems (1-1) face the Clinton LumberKings at 6:35 p.m. Friday in their home opener.
