Doggy Paddlers snap six-game skid with late-inning comeback against Bees

BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Doggy Paddlers are no longer treading water.

A five-run rally over the final three innings Friday night enabled the Doggy Paddlers to end a six-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Burlington Bees in Prospect League action at Community Field.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, Brady Kindhart got the Quincy comeback started with a leadoff single. He went to second on a groundout, to third on a single and scored on Krew Bond’s single.

In the eighth, Tyler Butina and Jake Merda delivered back-to-back one-out singles. After Kindhart flied out, General Schofield struck out swinging, but the wild pitch eluded Bees catcher Dylan Shepherd as Schofield was safe at first base and Butina scored to make it a 4-3 Burlington lead.

In the ninth, Jameson Johnson and Bond drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. Wandel Campana, who was pinch-hitting, reached on a fielder’s choice as Johnson scored when the Bees weren’t able to turn a double play and an error allowed Campana to take second base.

A wild pitch moved Campana to third as Jimmy Koza walked. One out later, with Koza having stolen second base to put two runners in scoring position, Butina delivered a two-run single to left field.

Doggy Paddlers reliever Nathan Murphy earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit and one walk.

Quincy finished the first half of the Prospect League season at 9-14 and in last place in the Northwest Division. The Doggy Paddlers will play host to the Clinton LumberKings, who are 18-7 and won the Northwest Division’s first-half title, in a doubleheader Saturday at QU Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.
