Doggy Paddlers force extra innings, fall to Bees in 10-inning affair

Doggy Paddlers

BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Quincy Doggy Paddlers rallied to force extra innings Thursday night.

Once there, the comeback ended.

The Burlington Bees took advantage of the extra-inning rule of placing a runner at second base at the start of the inning, using a sacrifice fly and a single to plate the winning run in a 6-5, 10-inning victory in Prospect League play at Community Field.

The Doggy Paddlers, who had won two consecutive road games, trailed 5-4 after allowing four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Bees capitalized on the Doggy Paddlers bullpen’s wildness by taking advantage of three hit batters, a walk and a wild pitch in the inning.

In the top of the eighth, though, Quincy came right back. With Harry Oden on second base with two outs, the Doggy Paddlers’ Jimmy Koza reached on an infield error. Wandel Campana followed with a single to left field to plate Oden with the tying run.

The Doggy Paddlers scored their first four runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined on a Brayden Roberts double, a Tyler Butina two-run triple and a Krew Bond double.

Quincy (3-5) begins a four-game homestand at 6:30 p.m. Friday against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp.
