Campana homers twice as Doggy Paddlers celebrate Fourth of July by drubbing Lucky Horseshoes

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Wandel Campana and the Quincy Doggy Paddlers supplied the fireworks on Fourth of July at Robin Roberts Stadium.

Campana homered twice and the Doggy Paddlers collected 15 hits overall in beating the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes 11-2 in Prospect League action Friday night.

Quincy led 2-0 before Campana homered leading off the top of the second. In the fourth, Jameson Johnson walked leading off the inning and Campana followed with a two-run blast to right field for a 5-0 advantage.

The Doggy Paddlers didn’t stop there. Tyler Butina had a two-out RBI single later in the fourth, two runs scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth, and Jake Merda delivered a two-out, two-run single in the seventh to make it 10-0.

Doggy Paddlers starter Cayman Hutson earned his first victory of the summer, allowing one run, six hits and one walk over seven innings, while striking out six. Jimmy Koza and Tommy Harrison each had three hits for Quincy, while Campana had two hits, walked once and scored three runs.

After a three-game road trip, the Doggy Paddlers (11-17) return to QU Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp beginning at 3:05 p.m. The two teams will meet again at 2 p.m. Sunday at QU Stadium for a single game.
