Blue Devils’ Uppinghouse reaches century mark with championship, Newbold tops talented field
JOHNSTON, Iowa — A career milestone came with a championship and a statement.
Owen Uppinghouse refuses to be beaten.
The Quincy High School senior wrestler earned his 100th career victory Saturday during the Baltzley Invitational, beating two of the top three ranked Class 3A wrestlers in Iowa in the process and winning the 165-pound championship.
The Blue Devils’ Bryor Newbold also topped a stacked field in winning the 175-pound bracket.
Uppinghouse handed Bettendorf’s Lincoln Jipp his first loss of the season in the semifinals with a pin in 3:39. In the champion, Uppinghouse won his 100th career match by handing Johnston’s Jacob Hegleson, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Iowa, his first loss of the season with a 9-8 victory.
Uppinhouse used two escapes and a takedown in the third period to gain the upperhand on Hegleson. Uppinghouse is now 14-0 this season.
Newbold beat West Des Moines’ Nick VanArkel 3-2 in the semifinals, handing VanArkel his first loss of the season. In the title match, Newbold beat Waverly Shell Rock’s Braxten Westendorf 4-1. Newbold is now 14-1 on the season.
