Blue Devils successfully defend WB6 title with three golfers finishing in top six

MILAN, Ill. — Quincy High School boys golf coach Randy Mettemeyer knew the Blue Devils could take nothing for granted despite their history of success in the Western Big 6 Conference championships and their status as the defending champions.

“We knew it wasn’t just show up and bring the trophy home,” Mettemeyer said.

They had to play well to bring the trophy home.

The Blue Devils placed three golfers in the top six and another in the top 10 as they defended their title with a 306 total Monday at Indian Hills Golf Course. Quincy finished seven strokes ahead of Moline (313) with Galesburg finishing third (321).

The Maroons won the Quincy Invitational on August 18, while the Silver Streaks beat the Blue Devils in a dual at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth earlier in the season.

So this was retribution.

“The boys competed and they played outstanding today,” Mettemeyer said.

Quincy’s Cameron Bergman, a senior, finished as the WB6 runner-up as he posted a 4-over 74, tying for second with Galesburg’s Jason Runbom. Moline’s Aaron Rogers was the WB6 medalist with a 3-over 73.

Blue Devils senior Luke Mettemeyer finished fourth with a 76, senior Luke Chevalier tied for fifth with a 77 and senior Raulin Zanger tied for ninth with a 79. Bergman, Mettemeyer and Chevalier earned first-team All-WB6, while Zanger earned second-team honors.

“At some point, a couple of them got into trouble, but they just dug in and didn’t give anything away,” Randy Mettemeyer said. “They were happy to defend their title. They were excited about that.”
