Schuckman: Milestone moments continue to pile up for QHS senior class
QUINCY — Crunching some numbers as the Quincy High School boys basketball players continue to reach milestones …
• When Bradley Longcor III passed Jeff Klingler for third place on the program’s all-time scoring list, someone noticed and asked about Jack Kramer’s point total at No. 2. There was a discrepancy between Kramer’s Hall of Fame bio and the top-10 list being used.
So into the archives we went.
Since the second edition of the QHS record book was produced in 1990, Kramer’s scoring total has been listed as 1,878 points. It turns out that number was wrong. Going through Kramer’s season-by-season totals and researching Herald-Whig stories from Kramer’s senior season revealed his correct career scoring total is 1,760 points.
That is the scoring total listed in his Hall of Fame biography as well.
Kramer also confirmed 1,760 points was his career total.
With that determined and verified, it opened the door for Longcor to move past Kramer this weekend. Longcor scored 12 points in Friday’s Western Big 6 Conference and followed it up with 20 points in Saturday’s 49-44 victory over St. Louis Chaminade in the Midwest Crossroads Shootout at Normal West.
That gives Longcor 1,773 career points and second place behind Bruce Douglas, who scored 2,040 career points. With seven regular-season games remaining and as many as seven games to be played in the postseason — the Blue Devils would need to reach the state tournament for that to happen — Longcor will need to average 19.1 points to match Douglas.
• Saturday night’s victory against Chaminade marked the 107th victory in the career of the Class of 2025. Four of those seniors — Bradley Longcor III, Keshaun Thomas, Dom Clay and Kamren Wires — have been on the varsity since their freshman season and have a 107-17 overall record with a chance to become the second winningest class in program history.
This will be the sixth graduating class in program history to reach the 100-victory plateau.
Here are the others in order of most victories:
Class of 1982 — 123-5
Class of 1983 — 115-8
Class of 1984 — 110-11
Class of 1981 — 109-12
Class of 1953 — 100-24
• When QHS celebrated the 100th season of boys basketball in 2006-07, Lincoln was one of only 15 programs with an all-time winning record against the Blue Devils. That is no longer the case. Quincy has won five of the last six meetings and now owns a 12-10 edge in the all-time series after its 51-21 victory over Lincoln on January 18.
Wednesday night, the Blue Devils have the chance to take the all-time lead in a series with another opponent. Quincy travels to Webster Groves (Mo.) for the seventh meeting with the Statesmen since the 2017-18 season.
Webster Groves won the first three meetings, while Quincy has won the last three, including 61-51 victory at Blue Devil Gym last season.
• Quincy senior guard Dom Clay continues inching toward the 1,000-point mark for his career. The Austin Peay signee currently has 868 career points and will join Longcor and Keshaun Thomas in the 1,000-point club should he get there.
It would be the first time in program history three members of the same graduating class have reached the 1,000-point plateau.
