Muddy River Sports editor receives pair of writing awards in APSE national contest

QUINCY — Muddy River Sports Editor Matt Schuckman received national recognition in the Associated Press Sports Editors annual writing and photography contest, earning top-10 honors in two writing categories.

The APSE announced the top 10 entries in all categories of the nationwide contest on its website this week. Official places will be released at a later date.

All APSE awards for 2022 will be handed out at the organization’s annual summer conference, which is scheduled to take place in Indianapolis on June 15-18.

Schuckman received top-10 mentions for column writing and event coverage. It is the second time in the last five years he has been honored for column writing.

The four columns he was judged on included:

Homegrown talent displaying hometown pride is what small-school basketball should be about;

In toughest of times, Raiders stand resolute as ‘pillar of strength’ for Orne;

Blue Devils’ Douglas pours every beat of his heart into love for his players;

By choosing to be phenomenal, Raiders ensure they are never to be forgotten.

In the event coverage category, Schuckman was honored for his coverage of the Quincy Notre Dame boys soccer team’s 4-3 victory over Quincy High School in which senior forward Tanner Anderson set the QND career scoring record with his game-winning goal. The coverage included a game story, photo gallery and “Schuck on a Truck” video interview with Anderson.

Schuckman, who helped launch Muddy River Sports in August 2021, has received four APSE writing awards in his current role as Muddy River Sports Editor. Overall, he has received nine APSE writing awards in the past five years.
