QUINCY — The third time proved to be the charm.

With Quincy Notre Dame boys soccer coach Greg Reis sitting on 399 career victories, the Raiders suffered back-to-back losses to quality teams in John Burroughs and Rochester. Saturday, a team that traditionally has given the Raiders fits visited Advance Physical Therapy Field, and it brought out the best in QND.

The Raiders scored two first-half goals against Gateway Legacy Academy with Nolan Heck finishing a corner kick and Rylan Fischer burying a ball from Brody Jones. In the second half, senior forward Leo Cann scored to complete a 3-1 victory and give Reis his milestone moment.

In 27 seasons, the QND Hall of Famer has won three state championships while becoming the 12th coach in Illinois High School Association history to reach 400 career victories.

After the game, QND’s six seniors discussed what it is like to play for a legendary coach and then Reis joined Muddy River Sports Editor Matt Schuckman on the tailgate of his pickup to talk about the milestone, the improved play and the pursuit of postseason success.
