2022 Quincy Notre Dame Hall of Fame inductee: John Frankenhoff, athlete

QUINCY — John Frankenhoff played a critical role in bringing a sectional championship back to Quincy and end a 14-year postseason drought.

Frankenhoff, a 1989 Quincy Notre Dame graduate, averaged 9.4 points per game for the boys basketball team as a sophomore. He led the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game as a junior when the Raiders won 18 games and a regional championship.

He was one of six players on the 1988-89 team who were between 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-6. Frankenhoff led the team in scoring at 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, but what made the Raiders difficult to beat that season was their scoring balance. All six seniors, who got most of the minutes, were capable of being the leading scorer each night.

The Raiders also survived a brutal early season schedule, playing Class AA teams in 10 of their first 14 games. They eventually won the school’s first sectional since 1975 before losing in the super-sectional to North Greene, finishing with a 21-9 record.

Frankenhoff finished with 1,059 career points — ranking eighth in school history when he graduated. He is one of only 14 players to score more than 1,000 career points. He also had more than 600 rebounds. The teams Frankenhoff played on won three regionals and a sectional.

Frankenhoff lives in Quincy and is the systems administrator for Quincy/Adams County 911 Center. He is the president of the Quincy Park District Board of Commissioners and has been a member of the board for more than 20 years. He also has been a baseball umpire for more than 30 years.
