Top-seeded Palmyra ends Monroe City’s district reign, will face South Shelby for title

MONROE CITY, Mo. — The district reign is over, ended by a champion’s biggest rival.

The Monroe City boys basketball team’s run of six consecutive Class 3 district championships came to a halt Wednesday night when top-seeded Palmyra eliminated Monroe City 52-30 in the Class 3 District 6 semifinals.

Palmyra (21-7) outscored Monroe City 14-4 in the second quarter to build a 10-point halftime lead. Tyler Banta buried a pair of 3-pointers and Bear Bock scored six points in the quarter. Banta and Carson Hicks combined for nine points in the third quarter as Palmyra’s lead ballooned to 16 points.

Hicks led Palmyra with 16 points, while Banta added 13 and Bock finished with 12. Quincy Mayfield led Monroe City with 21 points.

Palmyra will face second-seeded South Shelby at 6 p.m. Friday in the district title game. South Shelby dispatched Mark Twain 64-49 as Zaiden Wood finished with 19 points. Sam Northcutt led Mark Twain with 10 points.
