South Shelby relay teams, Monroe City’s DeGrave capture sectional track championships
MOKANE, Mo. — The South Shelby boys track and field team won a pair sectional titles in the relays Saturday at South Callaway High School, and Monroe City senior Waylon DeGrave jumped his way into the Class 2 state championship field.
The Cardinals won both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays as part of sending qualifiers to state in seven events.
The 4×400 relay team of Cameron Wiseman, Preston Elson, Noah Wilt and Kendal Hammond took first in 3:32.13, breaking their school record by more than a second. The 4×800 team of Wilt, Schyler Mason, Cooper Seaton and Beau Mason also took first in 8:31.04.
The 4×200 team of Wiseman, Hammond, Elson and Owen Stueve finished second in 1:32.99.
The Cardinals’ Gabe Bowen won the javelin with a toss of 167 feet, which broke his school record. Hammond took second in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 2.25 inches, while teammate Aadon Magruder was third at 47-7.
Seaton was third in the 1,600 run in 4:51.87, while Stueve was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 5.75 inches.
The Cardinals, along with qualifiers from Highland, Monroe City and Mark Twain, will compete at the Class 2 state track and field championships May 17-18 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City, Mo.
DeGrave, the Monroe City three-sport athlete headed to Lindenwood to play football, won the long jump with a leap of 21-2.75. He also was second in the triple jump with a jump of 42-7. Wyatt DeGrave, Waylon’s younger brother, was fourth in the triple jump at 41-7.25.
Mark Twain’s Sam Northcutt won a sectional title in the 800 run, finishing in 2:01.97. The Tigers’ Mason Delaporte was second in the 110 hurdles in 16.38, while Mark Twain’s 4×800 relay team was fourth in 8:42.70. Mark Twain’s Isaiah Austin was third in the discus with a toss of 129-9.
Highland’s Charlie Evans finished fourth in the 400 dash in 52.56, and the Cougars 4×200 team was fourth in 1:33.10.
