COLUMBIA, Mo. — Elly Lorenson finished on a high note.

Back-to-back losses Thursday in the Class 1 girls state wrestling tournament at Mizzou Arena sent the Palmyra junior into the fifth-place match at 170 pounds, but Lorenson responded by pinning Lexington’s Karalena Steinhauser to punctuate her spot on the podium.

Lorenson dominated Steinhauser, building a 9-0 lead before getting the pin in the third period.

She had a takedown in each of the first two periods and a two-point nearfall in the second period. Starting the third period on the bottom, Lorenson turned a reversal into a pin.

Hoping to become the first area girls wrestler to win a state title and improve on her second-place state finish as a sophomore, Lorenson carried a 43-1 record into the semifinals, but she suffered a 5-2 loss to Pleasant Hill’s Alena Thelin. Lorenson trailed 3-0 going to the third period before Thelin scored a takedown to provide plenty of cushion.

In the wrestleback semifinals, Lorenson was pinned in 2:30 by Kirksville’s Madisynn Crawford.

Lorenson finishes her season with a 44-3 record.
