COLUMBIA, Mo. — Elly Lorenson is halfway to a state championship.

The Palmyra junior won her first two matches at the Missouri Class 1 girls wrestling state tournament at Mizzou Arena on Wednesday to reach the semifinals at 170 pounds. Two victories Thursday will make her the first girls state champion from this area.

Lorenson, who finished second at 145 pounds last season, opened by pinning Harrisonville’s Taylor Kanoy in 1 minute, 56 seconds. She used two takedowns and a reversal to build a 6-4 lead before getting the pin.

In the quarterfinals, Lorenson trailed Owensville’s Bailee Dare 4-0 after the first period. A reversal led to a three-point nearfall and a two-point nearfall for a 7-4 lead. A reversal to open the third period was followed by a pair of three-point nearfalls before Lorenson recorded the pin in 5:13.

Lorenson (43-1) will face Pleasant Hill junior Alana Thelin (44-3) in Thursday’s semifinals. Marshfield senior Isabella Whitlock (43-8) and Kearney freshman Carli Vargas (37-3) face off in the other semifinal.
