Palmyra hires former Lafayette County coach to take over girls basketball program
PALMYRA, Mo. — It didn’t take long for Palmyra to find its next girls basketball coach.
Two weeks after the Palmyra School Board voted not to renew the teaching and coaching contract of Tim Southers after one season as the Panthers head coach, the board voted unanimously in special session Tuesday to hire Kelsey Stuart to take over the program.
Stuart spent last season at Lafayette County, located in Higginsville, Mo., where the Huskers went 9-18 and lost to University Academy Charter in the Class 3 District 14 championship game.
She inherits a program that returns its top four scorers from a team that went 21-7, finished second in the Clarence Cannon Conference and was the Class 3 District 6 runner-up.
The Panthers return a pair of unanimous first-team All-CCC selections in forward Candra King and guard Sydney Compton. King averaged 14.7 points and 13.4 rebounds per game, while Compton averaged 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds. Guards Clare Williams (10 ppg, 3.7 assists, 4.2 steals) and Taytum White (10.6 points) give the Panthers scoring depth.
