Palmyra doubles team brings home top-eight finish from Class 1 state tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Molly Gottman and Laura Noland made their state tennis tournament stay last until the very end.

The Palmyra doubles team qualified for the Class 1 tournament, played at the Cooper Tennis Complex, and finished eighth after winning two of their first three matches. 

Gottman and Noland opened the state tourney with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) victory over Ursuline Academy’s Vivian Jones and Joie King.

They suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Kennett’s Claire Bean and Handley McAtee in the quarterfinals but bounced right back to win the consolation quarterfinal matchup with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory over Lutheran St. Charles’ Abigail Cristea and Hadleigh Todd.

The Palymra duo dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Clayton’s Simone Sah and Katherine Nguyen in the consolation semifinals, and then fell 7-5, 6-1 to Ursuline Academy’s Alayna Quigley and Suzie Hanley.
