COLUMBIA, Mo. — Trevor Biggerstaff’s blistering start Monday at the Country Club of Missouri positioned him to chase a top-10 finish at the Class 1 state tournament.

The Canton junior opened with an even-par 36, and although he found some trouble on his closing nine, Biggerstaff posted an 8-over 80 and is tied for seventh in the 82-player field. Ash Grove’s Asher Rust shot a 1-over 73 to take the first-round lead.

The field will play 18 holes Tuesday and then crown the state champion.

Biggerstaff made a birdie on the par-5 12th and a bogey on the par-3 15th and was steady until the turn despite ragged weather conditions. He took a double bogey on the par-4 first hole and a triple bogey on the par-5 fifth to derail his closing nine.

Canton’s Avery Uhlmeyer shot a 92 and is tied for 37th.
