HANNIBAL, Mo. — Thanks to the generosity of those who loved Ronny Ferrel, children in Hannibal will receive free swim lessons at the Hannibal Aquatic Center this summer.

Ferrel, who worked at the pool for more than 55 years, died June 3, 2023. His family requested that memorials be made to fund swim lessons, the favorite part of Ferrel’s job.

Swim lesson signups are only done online.

Emily Hultgren, Aquatic Center director, encourages parents to sign up as soon as possible. In a press release, Hultgren said, “Classes have always filled up quickly, and this year will be even quicker.”

Three sessions of swim lessons will be available:

  • Session 1 — 12-12:40 p.m. June 17-20 and June 24-27
  • Session 2 — 6:10-6:50 p.m. June 17-20 and June 24-27
  • Session 3 — 6:10-6:50 p.m. July 8-11 and July 15-18

Online registration is available at https://hannibalparks.recdesk.com/Community/Home. Registration for each session will close when all 24 spots are filled. Children must be at least 4 years old to participate.

The Aquatic Center will open June 1, weather permitting, with hours of 1 to 6 p.m. daily.
