Payton Miller helped herself.

Having limited second-seeded Palmyra to two runs through six innings of last Friday’s Class 2 District 5 semifinal at Flower City Park, the Highland senior hurler came to the plate in the top of the seventh with an opportunity to break a 2-2 tie. She came through in a big way.

After Emma Harshberger reached base on a one-out single up the middle, MiKayla Dreyer popped out on the infield to bring Miller to the plate. On the first pitch from Palmyra’s Kennedy Wilson, Miller doubled to center field to score Harshberger with the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh, Miller retired the Panthers in order to preserve the 3-2 victory and send the third-seeded Cougars to the district championship game. Miller finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. She also struck out 10, walked none and allowed just four hits.

Still, the game-winning RBI double goes down as the biggest hit of the game and this week’s Liquor Booth Shot of the Game.
