Game Night Guide: Missouri district football semifinals
Friday’s Games
Class 4 District 5 at Porter Stadium
Top-seeded Hannibal (9-0) vs. Fourth-seeded Warrenton (3-6), 7 p.m.
• The Pirates enjoyed a first-round bye last week and are healthy as they begin their pursuit of a state championship. Hannibal is ranked third in Class 4 with a potential showdown with No. 4 West Plains in the state quarterfinals if it wins the next two weeks. The Pirates average 49.6 points and allow just 15.7 points, while the Warriors allow 40.2 points and average just 22.9 points. Hannibal sophomore Aneyas Williams has scored 29 touchdowns this season.
Class 2 District 7 at Palmyra High School
Second-seeded Palmyra (4-5) vs. third-seeded Macon (6-4), 7 p.m.
• The Week 3 victory against Macon helped the Panthers grab the No. 2 district seed and a bye last week, but the Tigers are riding more momentum with four victories in their last five games. That stretch includes a 28-22 victory over Centralia and a scoring 38 points in a loss to Monroe City. Palmyra went 2-3 in its final five games, including a five-point loss to Monroe City and a 12-0 loss to Centralia in a couple of slobberknockers.
Class 1 District 2 at Lankford Field
Top-seeded Monroe City (9-1) vs. fourth-seeded Brentwood (6-4), 7 p.m.
• The Eagles denied the Panthers of renewing an old Clarence Cannon Conference rivalry with last week’s last-second rally in the district opener. Brentwood scored on a 45-yard pass play as time expired with the receiver catching the ball at the 10-yard line and dragging a defender into the end zone. The Eagles then made the two-point conversion for a 38-36 victory over Louisiana.
Class 1 District 2 at Mark Twain High School
Second-seeded Mark Twain (9-1) vs. third-seeded St. Pius X Festus (8-2), 7 p.m.
• The Tigers had to wait to play another home game after Principia forfeited last week’s district opener, and they understand there will be nothing easy facing the Lancers. St. Pius X opened the season with a loss to state-ranked Monroe City, rattled off seven straight victories before losing to perennial power Valle Catholic. A 35-0 whitewashing of Crystal City in the district opener got the Lancers back on track.
Class 1 District 7 at Highland High School
Second-seeded Highland (7-3) vs. third-seeded Westran (5-5), 7 p.m.
• The best season in program history has the chance to get better should the Cougars reach the district championship game. Westran has not beaten a winning team this season and scored more than 14 points just once against a better-than-.500 team. Despite losing junior wide receiver Devin Stutsman to an injury, the Cougars remain loaded offensively and are averaging 33.9 points per game.
