Compton’s clutch at-bat, complete-game effort push Palmyra into district championship game
MACON, Mo. — The Palmyra baseball team had the right hitter at the plate at the right time.
Rylan Compton’s bases-loaded single to left field with out in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday gave the second-seeded Panthers and 2-1 walk-off victory over third-seeded Clark County in the semifinals of the Class 3 District 6 tournament at Bagby Field.
Palmyra (15-10) will face top-seeded Macon at 5 p.m. Monday for the district title. The Tigers (17-5) advanced with a 13-3 victory over fourth-seeded South Shelby.
Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers got a rally going as Raeson Miller led off with a double and Compton followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Compton stole second before a pair of outs stalled the inning. Haskins drew a walk before, and on the second pitch of Webb’s at-bat, Miller stole home for the tying run.
Palmyra’s seventh inning started with Lehman reaching on an error with one out and Horstmeier singling to out runners at the corners. The Indians intentionally walked Miller, and Compton drove in the winning run with his single on the second pitch of his at-bat.
Miller finished 3 for 3 and Compton was 3 for 4.
Compton also earned the complete-game victory, allowing one earned run and five hits while striking out seven and walking none.
