Call it a comeback: Palmyra scores 14 runs in fifth inning to erase 13-run deficit against Clark County
PALMYRA, Mo. — Quit is not part of the Palmyra baseball team’s vocabulary.
If it was, an epic comeback would never have happened.
Trailing Clark County 17-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning of Tuesday’s Clarence Cannon Conference game at Flower City Park, the Panthers rallied for 14 runs in the frame and finished off a 21-17 victory by scoring three more times in the sixth inning.
Palmyra scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the third to provide an ounce of hope since the inning began with the Panthers trailing 16-1. Clark County tacked on another run in the top of the fifth before Palmyra’s barrage of hits began.
Ethan Tallman led off the fifth with a single, and the next four batters all singled to lead to three runs. An error allowed a run to score before Alex Loman doubled to drive in another. Adam Goodwin followed with a double on a popup, which resulted in Loman getting caught between second and third and thrown out on the basepaths.
The next four batters each had a hit with Tallman delivering an RBI double. After a batter was hit by a pitch and a run-scoring sacrifice fly, Landyn Smith ripped a two-run double and Loman followed with an RBI single. After a Goodwin single, Alex Wilson singled to plate Loman and Goodwin and give the Panthers an 18-17 lead.
Palmyra had 19 at-bats in the inning with 11 singles, four doubles and two hit batters. There were no walks in the inning.
Wilson finished 4 for 6 with seven RBIs, while Loman and Lundberg both went 3 for 5. Every Palmyra starter had at least one hit and eight of the nine had two or more hits as the Panthers finished with 21 hits.
Drew Holsted went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Indians, who had 15 hits.
