ASSUMPTION, Ill. — It took the best defensive team in the state to derail the Western seventh-grade girls basketball team’s state championship dreams.

Washington St. Patrick, which didn’t allow more than 13 points in any postseason game, clamped down defensively on the Wildcats in a 22-6 victory Thursday night in the IESA Class 1A state title game at Assumption Central A&M Middle School.

St. Patrick was limited to its lowest scoring output of the postseason by Western as well.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but St. Patrick outscored Western 17-6 in the middle two quarters to take control. Kaylyn Forbis and Bella Vincent each had two points for the Wildcats.

Western finished its season with a 12-8 record. St. Patrick went 28-0.
