SuperFan Shootout Roundup: Mustangs overwhelm Cougars with balanced offense

QUINCY — Four players scored in double figures for the Unity girls basketball team in a resounding 73-31 victory over Winchester West Central on Saturday afternoon during the SuperFan Shootout at the Pit.

Unity (23-4) led 18-10 after the first quarter, then outscored the Cougars 20-4 in the second quarter. The lead never dipped below 20 points the rest of the game.

Ashlynn Arnsman and Brooklyn Stiefel both scored 17 points for the Mustangs. Caroline Knox came off the bench to score 16 points, and Sophia Shaffer added 10.

Freshman Brylee Lawson led Winchester West Central with 17 points. The Cougars (9-16) turned the ball over 34 times.

Cougars end first half strong, beat Bloodhounds

Fort Madison (Iowa) and Winchester West Central were tied with less than a minute to play in the first half, but the Cougars scored the last seven points of the second quarter and never relinquished the lead again in a 69-54 victory Saturday afternoon during the SuperFan Shootout at the Pit.

Fort Madison got within 47-38 with 3:08 in the third quarter, but the Bloodhounds never got any closer.

Sophomore Zack Evans scored 33 points for Winchester West Central (18-8). Junion Jaydon Howard and senior Cole Meyer each scored 10 points for the Cougars.

Senior Miles Dear led the Bloodhounds (15-3), ranked No. 1 in Iowa’s Class 3A poll, with 19 points. Tate Johnson added 13 points, and Dayton Davis had 10.

First-quarter deficit too much for Titans

A 16-point run by Alton Marquette in the first quarter proved to be too much to overcome for the West Hancock boys basketball team in a 49-36 loss on Saturday afternoon during the SuperFan Shootout at the Pit

West Hancock trailed 8-7 with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter after a basket by Alec Hymes. The Explorers made four 3-pointers in the 16-0 run (and six in the first quarter) to lead 24-7 entering the second quarter.

After allowing 24 first-quarter points, the Titans allowed just 25 more points. They climbed to within 36-30 after freshman Gavin Grothaus made a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, but they could get no closer.

Hymes had 13 points for the Titans (11-14). Parker Macias had four 3-pointers in the first quarter and led the Explorers with 19 points. Kendall Lavendar added 14.

Explorers’ massive scoring run dooms Titans

The West Hancock girls basketball team trailed 31-21 with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter after a basket by senior Bailey Barber.

Then Alton Marquette took over.

The Explorers scored the next 23 consecutive points and won 59-26 in the first game of the SuperFan Shootout on Saturday morning at the Pit.

Barber led the Titans with 17 points, but the rest of the team scored just nine points. West Hancock had 21 turnovers. Alyssa Powell led the Explorers with 14 points. Chloe White added 13.
