MENDON, Ill. — The halftime adjustments Unity boys basketball coach Keith Carothers made worked perfectly.

The Mustangs trailed Bushnell-Prairie City 27-24 at halftime of Friday night’s championship game of the Mississippi Valley Invitational Tournament before taking the lead with a 17-point third quarter and holding the Spartans to a single point in the fourth quarter.

The end result was a 53-39 victory and the championship of their own tournament.

Sawyer Allen led the Mustangs with 22 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter and three treys in the third quarter. Ethan Voss added 10 points, all in the second half, and tournament MVP Melvin McMillen went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line for all seven of his points.

In the third-place game, Horizon Southwest beat Western 63-39. Mason Smith and Jedd Abney led the Wildcats with 10 points apiece.
