Southeastern’s Stephens picks up two more all-state plaudits, IBCA honors 10 area players total
QUINCY — The ending wasn’t the ceremonial sendoff Danny Stephens had earned, but the postseason accolades the Southeastern senior is receiving are a stirring reminder of all he has accomplished.
Stephens, the 6-foot-7 forward, completed a trifecta of first-team all-state basketball honors, earning Class 1A plaudits from the Associated Press, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the Chicago Sun-Times.
Headed to the University of Missouri, Stephens averaged 29.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks despite suffering an injury against Steelville in the KHQA/American Family Insurance Superfan Shootout on Feb. 4 that cost him the final five games of his career.
A two-time first-team all-state selection, Stephens finished his prep career with 2,361 points with 818 rebounds.
He was one of 10 players in Class 1A named to the IBCA first team and one of five players named to both the AP and Sun-Times teams.
Stephens was one of 10 area players to receive IBCA recognition.
In Class 1A, Camp Point Central senior forward Isaac Genenbacher was a third-team selection after guiding the Panthers to a sectional championship game appearance. Genenbacher averaged 13.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.6 steals, while shooting 57 percent from the field.
Earning IBCA special mention in Class 1A were Brown County senior guard Cole Behymer, Central junior guard Nick Moore, Griggsville-Perry junior guard Wyatt Lipcaman and Payson Seymour senior forward Bryan Dieker.
In Class 2A, Quincy Notre Dame senior forward Jake Wallingford, Macomb senior guard Connor Watson and Illini West senior guard Nolan Deitrich each received special mention. In Class 4A, Quincy High School sophomore guard Bradley Longcor III received special mention.
