Blue Devils finally open season, net first victory

CHATHAM, Ill. — The Quincy High School girls tennis team had its first two regular-season events canceled, which meant Tuesday’s dual against Chatham Glenwood turned into the Blue Devils’ season opener and first victory with a 6-3 decision.

The Blue Devils’ won three singles matches in tiebreakers, including two after dropping the first set. At No. 1 singles, QHS’s Anika Reddy rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Glenwood’s Samantha Shankland. At No. 6 singles, the Blue Devils’ Arrianna Trinh earned a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 victory over the Titans’ Haylie Hembrook.

Quincy’s Gwen Mast at No. 3 and Medha Pujar at No. 5 also won singles matches, while the Blue Devils won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.

QND girls tennis team knocks off Macomb

QUINCY — The Quincy Notre Dame girls tennis team swept the bottom four singles matches in straight sets and all three doubles matches to post a 7-2 victory over Macomb at Reservoir Park. The Bombers’ Lucy Platt at No. 1 singles and Celena Mangalaraj at No. 2 singles each won in a tiebreaker. The Raiders didn’t lose another set.

Suns Classic opens with pair of comebacks

AUGUSTA, Ill. — A pair of rallies and a pair of lopsided victories highlighted the first night of pool play in the Suns Classic.

The Rushville-Industry volleyball team trailed Mendon Unity 15-2 in the second set but managed to come back to secure a 25-20, 25-22 victory. Kodi Duke had four kills, 14 service points and five aces for the Mustangs, while Jillian Shaffer had seven assists and nine digs. Western held off Brown County for a 25-20, 22-25, 15-12 victory.

Camp Point Central beat Beardstown 25-22, 25-12, while West Hancock hammered Biggsville West Central 25-9, 25-13 and Southeastern beat West Central 25-7, 25-12. Amanda Stephens finished with 14 kills and six assists for the Suns, while Kara Stephens had six kills and 12 assists and Kenzie Griswold had seven digs.

Blue Devils snap losing skid

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Quincy High School boys soccer team ended a season-opening four-game losing streak with Tuesday night’s 4-1 victory over Rock Island Alleman in Western Big 6 Conference play. Trace Routh scored twice, while Adrian Sommers and Aidan Albert each had a goal. Andrew Brown, Routh and Albert each had an assist.

Cougars take down Bobcats

BOWLING GREEN, Mo. — The Highland softball team earned a small measure of revenge against the team that ousted it from the postseason last fall, earning a 4-2 victory over Bowling Green on Tuesday. The Cougars recovered after allowing two first-inning runs, scoring twice in the third and twice more in the fourth.

Keera Rothweiler went 3 for 4 and Abby Lay had two hits for Highland (3-1). Lay allowed four hits and struck out 13 without allowing a walk.
