Bombers sweep way to championship
MACOMB, Ill. — The Macomb volleyball team rolled to the championship of its own tournament, capturing five consecutive matches in straight sets.
The Bombers went 3-0 in pool play, beating Monmouth United 26-24, 25-14, Geneseo 25-16, 25-19 and Kewanee Wethersfield 25-11, 25-21. In the semifinals, Macomb beat Bartonville Limestone 25-23, 25-16. In the title match, the Bombers dispatched Athens 25-15, 25-13.
Macomb’s Kathryn Lukkarinen, Jacque Adair, Kylie Robinson and Quinn Rexroat were named to the all-tournament team.
Chargers set school record by going low
CAMBRIDGE, Ill. — The Illini West boys golf team continues raising the bar by lowering its scores. Saturday, the Chargers won the 10th Mercer County Invitational by setting a new school record with a 296 team score at Valley View Country Club.
The Chargers were 39 strokes clear of the rest of the field. Illini West freshman Nolan Murphy took medalist honors with a 3-under 69, while freshman Bryson Grotts finished second with a 1-under 71. Senior Nick Bruns was third with a 2-over 74.
The Illini West girls finished fourth in the same event, which was their first tournament of the season. The Chargers posted a 457 and were led by freshman Priya Wear with a 109.
Cougars win twice in Troy tourney
TROY, Mo. — The Highland softball team went 2-1 in the season-opening Troy Tournament. The Cougars beat St. Dominic 9-1 with Abby Lay collecting two doubles and three RBIs to go with the pitching victory. Haleigh Winter went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs and Bailie Crist went 2 for 3 in a 12-2 victory over Logan-Rogersville.
Highland lost 7-6 to Troy Buchanan in eight innings with Keera Rothweiler going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Crist finishing 3 for 4.
Raiders take fourth at Gibson Woods
MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Quincy Notre Dame boys golf team finished fourth in the Monmouth-Roseville Invitational with a 332 team score at Gibson Woods Golf Course. Beau Eftink finished seventh individually with a 79.
Wildcats respond strong in second half
ST. LOUIS — The Culver-Stockton College women’s soccer team reacted well to allowing a one-goal lead to disappear, rallying to score twice in the second half of Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Harris-Stowe State University at Cardinal Ritter High School.
In the second half, Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez notched her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 59th minute to give the Wildcats the lead. C-SC’s Mikayla Giola picked up a rebound off a shot from Lexi Clark and scored to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead in the 76th minute. The Wildcats are 3-0 overall.
