Saukees, Hornets to collide in semifinals at Beardstown, while Titans stay in title chase
BEARDSTOWN, Ill. — Some of the area’s top underclass talent will go head-to-head Saturday with a berth in the Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic championship game on the line.
But don’t count out the old guard from having a say in which team advances.
The top-seeded Pittsfield girls basketball team reached the semifinals with a 58-45 victory Friday night over Illini Bluffs as freshman guard Reese Ramsey scored a game-high 24 points. Saukees freshman guardLincoln McCartney added eight points, while senior forwards Madison Frieden and Taylor Peebles each had six points.
The Saukees (13-0) will face fifth-seeded Brown County (9-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday after the Hornets knocked off fourth-seeded Canton 55-52.
Senior forward Ashlee Markert scored a game-high 20 points for the Hornets, netting 10 in the first quarter. Brown County sophomore guard Kenzie Kassing finished with 17 points, and sophomore guard Hope Ingram added eight points.
On the other side of the bracket, 10th-seeded West Hancock reached the semifinals with a 54-43 upset of second-seeded Abingdon-Avon. The Titans will face sixth-seeded Carrollton in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m.
Senior forward Dee Dee Church led the Titans with 18 points, including 15 in the first half, while junior forward Jaydn Climer added 14 points and sophomore guard Grace Grothaus finished with 12 points.
