Rumble on the River: Mustangs sweep Panthers behind two stout defensive efforts

QUINCY — Nick Maynard made two free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining in regulation Tuesday night to help the Unity boys basketball team seal a 45-41 victory over Monroe City in the 15th annual Rumble on the River.

It also completed a sweep for the Mustangs, as the Unity girls, ranked third in Class 1A, beat Monroe City 46-25 on the third of four nights in the prep showcase at John Wood Community College’s Student Activity Center.

The Unity boys trailed 15-12 in the second quarter before closing the first half on a 14-0 run. Maynard and Melvin McMillen each hit a 3-pointer during the run and Gavin Koenig scored all four of his points in that stretch. McMillen led the Mustangs with 16 points. 

Monroe City fought its way back by going 7 of 10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter with Jaylyn Countryman going 4 of 4. Reece Buhlig and Countryman scored 12 points apiece for the Panthers.

In the girls game, Unity held Monroe City to 11 points in the first half and two points in the third quarter to ease its way to the victory. Nine players scored for the Mustangs (13-1) with Kylee Barry and Ashlynn Arnsman each scoring nine. Naaron Hays led the Panthers with seven points. 

In the first game played Tuesday, the Central-Southeastern girls picked up a 51-30 victory over Warrenton, Mo. Lauren Miller led the Panthers with 13 points, while Amanda Stephens and Brilyn Lantz each scored 12 for C-SE (8-2).
