Regional wrestling: Saukees’ Davis captures crown at 170 with dominant effort in title match

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — By not wrestling the final weekend of the regular season to rest an aching shoulder, Pittsfield senior grappler Mason Davis put himself in prime position to vie for a regional championship.

Smart move.

Davis was the Saukees’ lone regional champion and one of three Pittsfield wrestlers to advance to sectionals with top three finishes Saturday at the Class 1A Jacksonville Routt Regional.

Davis beat Auburn’s Joey Barrow by technical fall, outscoring him 16-0 midway through the second period of the 170-pound title match. Davis is now 27-5 overall.

Also advancing for the Saukees were sophomore Aiden Baxter at 160 and freshman Tucker Cook at 182. Cook pinned Litchfield’s Hunter Hancock in 19 seconds in the third-place match.

The Saukees will wrestle next Saturday at the Vandalia Sectional.
