Record-setting O’Neil, defending champ Campbell qualify for finals at Class 1A state track meet
CHARLESTON, Ill. — Shannon O’Neil keeps going faster and faster, while Olivia Campbell keeps throwing farther and farther.
Saturday, they will have the chance to make a little history.

Campbell, the Pittsfield senior thrower, positioned herself to successfully defend her state title in the discus by topping the field in the preliminaries with a toss almost 2 meters farther than anyone else. She is in position to medal in the shot put as well.
West Hancock’s Bailey Barber also will be in the finals, finishing third in the preliminaries in the triple jump with a leap of 10.58 meters.
They will be the only area athletes competing in Saturday’s finals.
O’Neil posted the fourth fastest time in 300 hurdles, finishing in 46.97 seconds. Altamont’s Grace Nelson led the field in 44.29 seconds.
