QND’s Wiewel, Illini West’s Robertson earn all-state honors from Illinois baseball coaches
QUINCY — Abram Wiewel’s Tuesday couldn’t have gone much better.
Not only did the recent Quincy Notre Dame graduate catch a foul ball while attending a game at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., but he became the third QND baseball player in the past four years named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association all-state team.
Wesley Robertson’s Tuesday was pretty memorable as well.
The Illini West junior infielder became the first player in program history to be named to the IHSBCA all-state team twice in a career, joining Wiewel on the Class 2A squad. Pittsfield senior catcher Luke Saxe received honorable mention.
Wiewel fashioned a historic final season with the Raiders, tying the single-season record for home with 12, which also was the most hit by a prep player in Illinois. He finished the season hitting .467 with 40 RBIs and 10 doubles.
As the ace of the Raiders’ staff, the right-handed hurler went 6-2 with a 2.38 ERA over 47 innings. He struck out 89 batters overall and 12 or more batters in four starts, including a 16-strikeout effort in six innings in a 10-2 victory over Brown County.
He joins Jake Schisler (2023) and Dalton Miller (2022) among the Raiders’ list of all-state recipients.
Robertson hit .430 with a .701 slugging percentage as he collected 46 hits, including four doubles, five triples and five home runs. He drove in 35 runs, while striking out just eight times in 137 plate appearances.
On the mound, Robertson threw 52 innings with a 3-3 record, two saves and a 2.18 ERA, while striking out 57 as the Chargers won 25 games.
Saxe hit .453 with nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 26 RBIs. He also committed just two errors defensively.
