Pittsfield’s Campbell repeats as Class 1A state discus champion
CHARLESTON, Ill. — Olivia Campbell discovered twice is nice.
The defending Class 1A state discus champion, the Pittsfield senior was the only thrower in the field to break the 42-meter barrier, doing it in both the preliminaries and the finals of the Class 1A girls state track and field championships.
Her toss of 42.47 meters won her the state title Saturday at O’Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus and was more than a meter farther than the rest of the field.
Sherrard’s Charlotte Frere was second with a toss of 41.40 meters.
Campbell brought home a second medal in the shot put, finishing fourth with a toss of 11.75 meters. Oregon’s Jenae Bothe won the event with a toss of 13.17.
Liberty senior Shannon O’Neil also captured a fourth-place medal in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 47.00 seconds. Liberty’s Arianna Neisen finished eighth in the 3,200 run in 11:29.03, eclipsing her personal best by 15 seconds.
Quincy High School’s Anna Schuering finished 12th in the Class 3A 800 run, clocking a time of 2:21.21. She also finished 20th in the 3,200 in 11:02.61.
