Liberty eighth grade girls basketball team finishes as state runner-up in Class 2A

HAVANA, Ill. — A second-quarter offensive spurt gave the Havana eighth grade girls basketball team the edge it needed to beat Liberty 36-25 in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 2A state championship game Thursday night at Havana High School.

Liberty ends its season as the state runner-up with a 25-3 record.

Havana outscored Liberty 12-4 in the second quarter and finished with a 27-1 record.

Ryleigh Brunenn made three 3-pointers and led the Eagles with nine points. Weslee John added eight points, Leila Parkhill chipped in with six points and Aubrey Fessler had two points. John finished as the leading scorer in the state tournament with 40 points.
