Illinois state wrestling: Three area grapplers will have to fight way through wrestlebacks
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — To reach the podium at the Illinois High School Association state wrestling championships, three area grapplers are going to have to fight their way through the Class 1A wrestlebacks.
Quincy Notre Dame senior Curtis Steinkamp, Illini West senior Lance Belshaw and Pittsfield senior Mason Davis each suffered an opening-round loss Thursday at State Farm Center.
Steinkamp lost an 8-0 major decision to Richland’s Carson Bissey at 126 pounds. Belshaw suffered a 6-2 loss to Dakota’s Tyler Simmer at 145 pounds. And Davis was pinned by Yorkville Christian’s Jackson Gillen in 58 seconds.
Each of the wrestlers will need to win three consecutive matches in the wrestlebacks to finish in the top six and five matches to finish as high as third.
Steinkamp (41-6) will face Rockridge’s Jude Finch in the first round of wrestlebacks. Belshaw (32-8) goes up against Reed-Custer’s Landon Markle, and Davis (30-8) faces Sandwich’s Samuel Dale.
