Holiday tournament roundup: Top four seeds roll on at Lady Tiger Classic

BEARDSTOWN, Ill. — The top-seeded Unity girls basketball team and fourth-seeded Brown County remained on a collision course for a semifinal matchup in the Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic following easy victories in Monday’s opening round.

The Mustangs dispatched Winchester West Central 63-17 as Sophia Shaffer finished with 15 points.

The Hornets had no trouble with Athens, winning 64-40 after scoring 25 points in the third quarter. Katey Flynn led four Hornets in double figures with 16 points, while Klare Flynn had 12 points, Gabby McGath had 11 and Kaci McKeon added 10.

Unity will face Abingdon-Avon at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals, while Brown County squares off with Illinin Bluffs at 5:30 p.m. The semifinal matchup would be at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

On the other side of the bracket, third-seeded Illini West rolled to a 64-28 victory over West Hancock. Caydee Kirkham scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Chargers jumped out to a 16-3 advantage. Hallie Ray added 12 points for the Chargers.

Illini West faces Jacksonville Routt in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Second-seeded Havana beat Jacksonville 53-19 as Taryn Wickman scored 16 points. The Ducks face Macomb in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
