Havana’s Howerter keeps Central from generating offensive attack in regional championship game
CAMP POINT, Ill. — Havana pitcher Maddie Howerter made life difficult for the Camp Point Central softball team.
Howerter allowed just four singles, struck out eight and shut out the Panthers as the Ducks won the Class 1A Camp Point Regional championship with a 5-0 victory Friday.
Howerter impressively wriggled out of a jam in the top of the third inning, setting the stage for Havana to snare the lead. With one out, Central’s Emma Stephens singled up the middle and Karly Peters reached on an error. A single to center field by Claire Huston loaded the bases, but Howerter got Lauren Miller to pop out in foul territory and struck out Ashley Peters to end the threat.
The Ducks scored three times in the bottom of the inning as Kaydi Miller hit a two-run home run and Lily Snowden delivered an RBI single. Havana scored two more times in the fourth inning with Howerter delivering a two-run, two-out single.
Central (16-8) drew back-to-back one-out walks in the sixth inning, but nothing came of it.
Stephens had two of the Panthers’ four hits, while also taking the loss in the circle as she allowed five runs and eight hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
The Ducks (23-3-1) advance to the Triopia Sectional and will face either Payson Seymour or Triopia at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
