Freshman hurler tosses second straight one-hitter as Pittsfield softball team posts shutout victory
BEARDSTOWN, Ill. — Emma Wombles has been virtually unhittable of late.
The Pittsfield softball team’s freshman right-hander tossed a one-hit shutout of Beardstown in Wednesday night’s 13-0 victory, giving her back-to-back one-hitters as part of the Saukees’ three-game win streak. Wombles has allowed only seven hits in her last 20 innings pitched.
Against the Tigers, she struck out seven, walked one and allowed only a single with one out in the fifth inning. Wombles struck out 10 in last Saturday’s 6-0 victory over Alton in which she allowed just one hit. She has 43 strikeouts in 29 innings this season.
She helped her own cause Wednesday by going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
The Saukees took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Rebecca Neupauer led off with a walk and scored on Kelsey Freesmeyer’s one-out single. In the third, the Saukees had five consecutive batters reach base safely with one out to spark a five-run inning. Kenley Gerard delivered a two-run double and Wombles had an RBI single.
In the fourth, Pittsfield loaded the bases on three consecutive walks before scoring four times on a walk, a passed ball, a wild pitch and an error.
Neupauer, Freesmeyer, Lila Simon, Josie McClintock and Torie Stambaugh each scored twice for Pittsfield, which is 9-4 overall.
