Carthage boys to play Thursday for third place in IESA Class 2A seventh grade state tournament

MACON, Ill. — The Carthage Junior High School boys basketball team will play for third place in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 2A seventh grade state tournament on Thursday night at Meridian High School.

Carthage won its quarterfinal game 42-31 over Decatur Robertson on Saturday morning, then lost 37-27 to Stewardson-Strasburg in Saturday night’s semifinal game.

Gibson Bergmann led the Blueboys with 28 points against Robertson, while Troy Wear added 11 points. The Blueboys outscored Robertson, which entered the game undefeated, in each of the first three quarters.

Wear made three 3-pointers against Stewardson-Strasburg, and Bergmann added 12 points. Carthage (22-3) led 9-8 after one quarter but was outscored 21-10 in the second and third quarters.

Carthage will play Riverdale Washington for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday. Stewardson-Strasburg will play Normal Metcalf for the Class 2A championship.
