HANNIBAL, Mo. — Hannibal football coach Jeff Gschwender and the Pirates knew Jefferson City Helias presented a tough challenge, but after a 31-20 loss at Porter Stadium in Friday night’s season opener, they know they’ll be better for having faced a Class 5 juggernaut.

“We definitely dealt with some adversity,” Gschwender said. “But our kids fought. … They’re just itching get back out and keep playing.”

Mike Ferreira rushed for 129 yards, Waylon Anders threw for 111 yards and score and the Pirates moved the ball efficiently at times, but the Crusaders always had an answer. For example, after Anders connected with Karter Reed on a 46-yard touchdown pass for an 8-0 lead, Helias returned the ensuing kick off 95 yards for a touchdown.

Helias scored twice in the final 3:31 of the first half to build a 17-8 lead it never relinquished.
