Pirates bury Hornets with overwhelming first-quarter surge in NCMC opener
FULTON, Mo. — An ominous start didn’t translate to an oh-no-that-just-happened finish.
Actually, a fumble on the Hannibal football team’s first possession Friday night against Fulton was merely a blip during an otherwise rock-solid performance in the North Central Missouri Conference opener.
The Pirates followed the lost fumble by scoring on four consecutive possessions before the first quarter was even complete, rolling to a 48-0 victory at Robert E. Fisher Jr. Stadium.
After Fulton recovered the Hannibal fumble on the second play from scrimmage, the Hornets were forced to punt and everything avalanched thereafter. Markahl Humphrey gave the Pirates the lead with a 4-yard touchdown run at the end of a four-play, 60-yard drive.
Following an Ashton Watts interception, Aneyas Williams scored the first of his four touchdowns with a 16-yard run. Humphrey turned a pass from Waylon Anders into a 67-yard scoring play, and Williams finished the first quarter with a 47-yard touchdown run.
The advantage ballooned to 42-0 by halftime as Williams scored on a 15-yard run and a 15-yard pass. He finished with 159 yards rushing on 10 carries. Humphrey had 94 yards on six carries.
Hannibal (2-2, 1-0 NCMC) returns to Porter Stadium next Friday following a three-week road trip to take on Mexico in another conference tilt.
