Hannibal’s Thomas earns spot in U.S. Junior Amateur field
ALTON, Ill. — Quinn Thomas’ challenge of getting his golf game to be as consistent as he wants it seems to be less of a struggle these days.
Shooting a 3-under 69 in a national qualifier changes things.
The Hannibal senior tied for the top spot Tuesday in a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course, earning one of three spots in the nation’s premier junior event. Thomas will tee it up at the U.S. Junior Am at the Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek Courses at the Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C., beginning July 24.
Thomas got off to a good start on the 6,892-yard, par-72 course with a birdie on the par-5 second hole. Another birdie on the par-5 ninth hole allowed him to make the turn at 2-under 34.
He bogeyed the par-5 10th, but closed strong with birdies on the par-3 12th and the par-5 15th holes to earn his spot atop the leaderboard.
Gaige Lewis of Springfield, Mo., and Bryson Hughes of St. Johns, Fla., matched Thomas at 3-under 69.
Macomb’s Connor Hamm shot a 3-over 75.
