JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The strength, size and athleticism that is making Tre Hoskins an NCAA Division I football recruit is giving him an edge in track and field, too.

The Hannibal junior enjoyed his best throw in the shot put on his first attempt Friday and finished third at the Class 4 boys state track and field championships at Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.

Hoskins hit 17.96 meters (58 feet, 11.25 inches) on his first attempt and break his own school record. Rockwood Summit’s Omar Hussein won the shot put title with a toss of 18.86 meters (61 feet, 10.5 inches), with Kirksville’s Bennett Fraser taking second with a toss of 18.41 meters (60 feet, 4.75 inches).

The Hannibal 4×200-meter relay team of Landyn Essig, Kade Hoskins, Chance Whiteside and Dallas Baker qualified for Saturday’s finals by finishing eighth in the preliminaries in 1 minute, 29.74 seconds. Osage had the fastest qualifying time at 1:27.82.

The Pirates’ 4×100 relay team did not qualify for the finals after failing to finish its heat race.

Essig will compete Saturday in the long jump.

In the girls state championships, Hannibal freshman Kaliyah Chinn finished 12th in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.21 seconds. The top eight times from the heat races advance to Saturday’s finals.
